Identify the Used Auto Part You Need

Working on a vehicle whether a truck or car can be a challenge. Most important you have to identify the part that needs to be replaced. Once that has been determined you have to find the part. If you use a retail auto parts store you can give them a call and they will go thru a list of questions to help you determine the part number the parts availability in their warehouse etc. However we know there are some folks out there, men and women that are determined to go it alone and replace auto parts themselves from a used auto parts yard.

With so many types of vehicles and the many many makes and models out there, knowing which part is going to work for your particular vehicle. There are many ways to determine your vehicles particulars and determine which part is going to be right for your repair.

First off you may get lucky and find the proper owners manual in your glove box. Of course if you bought the vehicle used you have to make sure it is in fact the proper manual. Fortunately auto manufacturers have several ways to properly ID your vehicle. The picture on the cover of an owners manual may look like your car or truck but to make sure it's the same you should cross reference it with the VIN and  manufacturers ID tag.

A VIN is the manufacturers Vehicle Identification Number. It is located in a couple different areas but the most popular and easy to access is under the windshield on the drivers side where the windshield meets the body of the vehicle. It is stamped on to a metal tag that is secured to the vehicle to deter tampering.

The Manufacturers id tag is typically located in the drivers side in the door jam either on the inside of the
door or on the body. You probably have noticed it but never had a reason to take a look. This Manufacturers tag will give you the exact date, year and location of manufacture. Also it has all the information you need like paint colors etc. It is a great place to cross reference items like your owners manual. The numbers should match up, if not you can use these numbers to source your parts for the proper make and model.

There is nothing worse than getting home from the used parts yard or the parts store only to find  you bought the wrong part. Doing a little extra work can save you a lot of time and money. And save you another trip back to the parts store.
