Maybe it’s just something minor and cosmetic on your Toyota Camry or worse you have been dumbing quarts of oil in your Lexus all winter long. Now is the time to consider pulling some used auto parts and getting on top of these projects before things can get much worse.

Replacing body parts like doors, bumpers hoods and trimparts are not likely going to threaten the overall operation of your vehicle.  These types of repairs are typically elective. No one wants to be riding down the street with a huge dent in a door it makes it difficult to exit and enter the vehicle but for the most part the car or truck will still start and operate fully. 

When it comes to mechanical issues however that is a whole other story. If you have owned a vehicle for a long time you can probably tell if a noise or a symptom your vehicle is having is going to cause a side of the highway breakdown. Causes of large amounts of oil consumption may be a simple as a loose oil filter this would allow oil to slowly drain out the gap between the filter and the engine block. Checking this for tightness is as simple as trying to give the filter a twist by hand. Oil filter wrenches are cheap and easy to use. If you change your own oil they are a must to keep on hand.

Of course if you are like me the simple answer is rarely the issue. There can also be leaky seals and gaskets within the engine itself. If you get a big puff of blue smoke upon starting your vehicle this may be valve guide seals cracked, allowing oil to leak into the cylinders while parked. Although this may not be a great use of used parts if there is damage to the engine or if you are in need of internal engine parts this may be a good time to call your local used auto parts lot and ask their advice.

Some of the more popular used auto parts that are purchased are pretty easy to dismount and install. These are the parts a few tools and a place to work on your repair is all you need. Heck I have seen guys replace transmissions in the middle of the street before, starters too.

Mirrors – Tend to get damaged because they stick out from the side of the vehicle a bit. They are exposed and thus are vulnerable to snow plows in cold weather states. Perhaps there are pedestrians that are not paying attention. Items may fall off other vehicles on the freeway or parking lots where someone parks too close. Any one of these reasons may call for a replacement of your side view mirrors.

Bumbers - Simply purchasing a used part cuts down on excessive labor costs, repair materials, and the expense of the bumper.

Alloy Wheels – Over time these can become pitted and the result is a loss of tire pressure. You can disassemble them and use a grinder to regain the surface or you can usually find a used set at a reasonable price and replace the bad ones.
